Recently, optical interconnects have been attracting much attention since they are expected to solve most problems that the conventional copper-based electrical interconnects suffer. For deployment of short-distance optical interconnects in the computing platform, low-cost and high performance optical components are required. Monolithically integrated VCSEL and VCSEL-based resonant cavity enhanced photodetector (RCEPD) can be a good choice for such applications.

In this talk, design issues for VCSEL and RCEPD will be presented. As for VCSEL, realistic simulation of intra-cavity contacted VCSEL, FDTD analysis of optical mode of micro-lens integrated VCSELs, digital-alloy growth technique for micro-lens formation, and holographic lithography for photonic crystal patterning will be presented. As for RCEPD, cavity-mode wavelength tuning technique, DC/RF experimental results, and optimization of parasitic circuit components for higher bandwidth will be presented. In addition, opto VLSI and motion sensing application will be introduced. The opto VLSI which is electrically-controlled grating, can be used to steer interconnect beams.

Use of integrated VCSEL and RCEPD for compact motion sensing applications will also be discussed.
