Project
All projects are mostly experimental in nature and involve the design and test of advanced photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) for the development of high-power supercontinuum light sources with a spectrum that reaches down to 350nm. This will be done by numerical and experimental optimization of the fiber structure, by locally tapering the fibers down to smaller dimensions, and by designing them so that the detrimental effect of photodarkening is minimized.

The Postdoc will be in charge of establishing a new experimental facility for supercontinuum measurements at DTU Fotonik and for measurements of the noise properties of the source.

One PhD project will deal with the measurement of supercontinuum generation in tapered PCFs and comparison with numerics to develop the optimum fiber structure.

The other PhD project will focus on the important photodarkening problem with silica fibers exposed to UV light.

Both PhD projects will have supervisors from both DTU Fotonik and NKT Photonics A/S in Birkerød, who are the world’s largest supplier of Supercontinuum light sources and photonic crystal fibers.

The projects are part of a DKK 6 million project supported by the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation.

Qualifications

Candidates for the PhD scholarships should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

Candidates for the Postdoc position should have academic qualifications equivalent to the PhD level.

The candidate for the PhD project on Photodarkening should preferably have experience with glass chemistry. The other PhD candidate and the postdoctoral candidate should preferably have experimental experience with fiber optics.

Approval and enrolment of PhD Students
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU
PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms for the PhD positions are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students.

The appointment terms of the Postdoc will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.
